Government Commits to Roe Highway Extension
The Liberal/National State Government has announced the creation of the South Metro Connect project team to manage the environmental approvals, engineering design and community engagement processes for the proposed Roe Highway extension from the Kwinana Freeway through to Stock Road.
The team, made up of senior Main Roads officers and personnel from environmental and engineering consulting firm AECOM, would be responsible for ensuring strict environmental guidelines and approvals were met.
At the last State election, communities across the Southern Metropolitan area had their say on this important infrastructure project and overwhelmingly voiced their support for the Roe Highway extension.
Fundamentally, the proposed Roe Highway extension will mean fewer freight and passenger vehicle movements on suburban streets. And from an economic perspective, this proposed investment in the State's infrastructure will support WA jobs by improving access to the Fremantle Inner Harbour, the proposed Outer Harbour and the Kwinana Industrial Area.
I also welcome the Minister and the South Metro Connect team's commitment for the project to be heavily focused on achieving good environmental outcomes. Like any major infrastructure project, environmental issues should always be front and centre.
The environmental and heritage aspects of this project are highly sensitive and are extremely important to both me and the broader local community. I have sought assurances that the State Government has the utmost appreciation for the natural environment and are committed to the highest levels of environment standards for the proposed Roe Highway Extension.
