Ovarian Cancer

February is Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month and I urge all women in the electorate to become aware of the symptoms of ovarian cancer and if in doubt, to seek advice from their doctor.

This year, more than 1,200 Australian women will be diagnosed with ovarian cancer and of those, around 800 will die from the disease. However, if ovarian cancer is diagnosed in the early stages, most women will survive and that's why it is so important to get the message out there.

In the past, Ovarian Cancer has been known as the silent killer and many people think that it has no symptoms at all. But there are symptoms that you should be looking out for, including abdominal or pelvic pain, abdominal bloating, needing to urinate often and feeling full quickly. Other symptoms that may be related include back pain, changes in bladder or bowel habits, heavy fatigue, unexplained weight gain or weight loss, and bleeding between periods or after menopause.

If you are worried about symptoms or would like information about support services, please call Ovarian Cancer Australia on 1300 660 334, check out the website www.ovariancancer.net.au or consult your doctor.

The Year of the Dragon

I was very pleased to act as one of the judges at the WA Miss China Pageant that was held on Friday 3 February 2012 at Gloucester Park. It is the biggest Chinese New Year function in WA with around 12,000 people attending and is always an entertaining night of harness racing, Chinatown stalls and lots of entertainment for families.

There were 12 contestants in the WA Miss China Pageant and the ladies were judged on their talent, poise and beauty. Ms Kimberley Lye was the overall winner and she was crowned by last year's winner, Ms Eva Li.

At the end of the harness racing and the pageant, a huge colourful dragon made its way through the crowd and numerous Lion Dancers put on an energetic performance to help welcome in the Year of the Dragon. A spectacular fireworks display was a fitting end to a wonderful event.

I congratulate Mr Richard Tan and his team of organisers from Australia Asia Business Weekly and representatives from the Chung Wah Association and the Mulan Arts and Culture Association and all the participants for putting on such a successful event.
